The number of panels that you’ll need for the door depends on how wide each panel is separately, but ideally, you want to pick as few panels as possible. The widest possible door panels you can have for a bi-folding door are between 1 and 1.1M.

When we think about a bi-fold door, we generally think in odd numbers for the number of panels. If you have an odd number of panels, then the door will always slide and fold in the same direction. This helps with the installation of security features like a multipoint locking system.

If you want an even number of panels, then we recommend that you split your kit into odd operating numbers. To give an example, a structure with four doors should be split up into a 3 + 1 configuration. This helps to make sure you have a lead door which uses a working multi-point lock. Generally speaking, it’s best to let us handle the configuration – we know what we’re talking about and can help you out.

Like most manufacturers, we’ll give you our thoughts on individual heights that you can reach with the doors we provide. The industry standard for maximum height is usually 2.4m, but you can get taller options in specific situations.

Most pre-made FDSs are roughly 5m, so keep this in mind when thinking about the size of the holes; if you want floor-to-ceiling glazing, you’ll usually need to get it specially made:

Your typical six-panel folding door can be fitted in a day. Bigger doors take longer.

Glazing for your door can be either double or triple glazing, depending on the situation.

In the last few years, we’ve seen a big rise in the demand for triple glazing, it has to be said. We attribute this increase to the building regulations for properties becoming tougher and a lot of homeowners trying to make sure that their homes are energy efficient.

With this being said, it’s also true that a double-glazed door that’s been made to perform well can actually be as effective as a triple-glazing system in the right circumstances.

If you’re going to be selecting a glazing system, you need to look at the U-value. The U-value measures the ability of the glass to insulate heat – you want a low value on this scale for good properties.

In our personal opinion, it’s rare that triple glazing is worth the money. The higher cost doesn’t always equate to a lower value, which makes it a poor choice. Stick to double glazing.

A lot of well-made systems do have a level threshold – we offer it, for example. You’d want the top of your floor track to be flush with the floor and for the level of the internal and external floor to be the same.

However, with this being said, it’s worth noting that this can negatively impact how watertight your overall space is, so we don’t recommend it without the use of proper drainage. If you’re going to have a level threshold, then you need to make sure that it doesn’t pool in front of any doors, as this can force it indoors, so there needs to be a gradual slope.

In an area which is highly exposed, it is possible to get the appearance of a level threshold. You do this by building up the external floor levels with timber decking and making it level with the internal flooring, but the secret is a 75mm upstand to stop the water.

A threshold design can vary a lot, but you’ll want to keep in mind that lower thresholds can’t be fully weatherproof. Speak to us and find out more.

There’s definitely an ongoing trend for contemporary extensions these days. It means that aluminium has come up as a popular choice of door because not only is it strong, but it doesn’t need a lot of maintenance. You can also use timber to get the look you want, but you should keep in mind that timber will need ongoing maintenance to be effective.

Your other big consideration should always be the way that the door opens. There are certain types of bi-fold doors where your best bet will be to consider something which can be opened or closed as one unit.
